My journey to independence

When is the perfect time to go freelance? The answer I discovered was never. There is never a right time. You gotta just do it.

I won’t lie – going out on your own is scary. For a number of reasons. First off, employment gives you security - a regular and dependable wage, regular work, routine, even account managers to keep track of what you’re up to. These things are reassuring but can feel claustrophobic after a while.

For years I have known that working for myself is my goal but as soon as I started to feel confident that “I can do this” free of the conventional pitfalls of studio life, I knew I had to give it a shot.

WHY NOW?

Working from home during the pandemic has given me a prolonged taste of independent working and I discovered I actually work best this way - self managed and free to structure and plan my days. So during this period I started building my business outside of my day job, which was exhausting, unsustainable yet incredibly rewarding.

Outside of my day job I was specialising in working with people who had left their jobs in order to chase and build their dreams without actually taking that final step myself – to be truly authentic (for myself and my clients) I knew what I had to do.

MY MISSION

Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t a decision I took lightly – I’ve been wrestling with it for years. But now I have a clear purpose for my business, which clearly aligns with my own circumstances and values – I feel I finally have a clear direction and mission.

I want to live a good life doing something I love – using my passion for design I want to help people achieve their dreams and tell their story. It’s as simple as that.

Whether that’s helping them brand a new business, art direct an already established brand in need of a little guidance or build a website where they can sell and promote their products – if someone has an idea that will make their world a better place - or they have an idea that will make the world a better place, then that’s the kind of person I want to be working with!

IN SUMMARY

Since starting my journey to independence, I’ve discovered that we all adapt to our situations. Sure I was scared to start with, just as many other start-ups are in their first few months of trading but once we get used to our new environment, we adapt, improve and thrive.

We can talk ourselves out of anything but if we roll up our sleeves and get stuck in, before we know it we’ll be wondering why we didn’t do it sooner.
